A newly published patent reveals exciting new features for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, including rumored mouse functionality. Let's delve into the details and the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
Switch 2 Joy-Cons: Mouse Support and More
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a Nintendo patent on February 6, 2025, detailing innovative Joy-Con features for the Switch 2. The patent strongly suggests mouse capabilities, corroborating speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showed the controller being swiped across a surface.
This patent confirms earlier rumors, filling the void left by Nintendo's silence regarding Switch 2 details. The patent describes a sensor detecting reflected light to enable mouse-like operation, depending on which surface of the Joy-Con is used.
Enhanced Functionality and New Controllers
The Switch 2 Joy-Cons retain the detachable design of their predecessors, but add the novel mouse functionality. A new charging dock allows simultaneous charging of up to two Joy-Cons. A magnetic attachment, complete with a wrist strap, securely connects the Joy-Cons to the console.
The patent also unveils a new controller design: a standard controller split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality. These halves can be combined using a separate attachment to form a traditional controller.
Important Note: While the patent details these features, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm them. The final Switch 2 product may differ.
Upcoming Nintendo Direct: April 2nd, 2025

This broadcast will likely provide official confirmation and further details on the console and its accessories. The Switch 2 is slated for release in 2025, though a precise date remains unannounced.
