SwitchArcade Roundup: September 2nd, 2024 - Reviews, Sales, and News!

Hello fellow gamers! Welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 2nd, 2024. While the US might be enjoying a holiday, it's business as usual here in Japan. That means a fresh batch of reviews and deals are waiting for you!

News Flash:

Guilty Gear Strive Arrives on Switch in January 2025!

Get ready, fighting game fans! Arc System Works is bringing Guilty Gear Strive to the Nintendo Switch on January 23rd, 2025. This version boasts 28 characters and rollback netcode for smooth online play (though sadly, no cross-play). Having loved it on Steam Deck and PS5, I'm eagerly anticipating the Switch release. Check out the official website for more details.

Reviews and Mini-Views:

Bakeru: A Charming Platformer (4.5/5)

Let's be clear: Bakeru isn't Goemon, despite sharing some similarities and featuring developers from that series. Bakeru is its own unique creation. Developed by Good-Feel (known for their work on Wario, Yoshi, and Kirby titles), it's a delightful 3D platformer. You'll explore Japan, battling enemies, collecting cash, and uncovering secrets across over sixty levels. The collectibles are particularly engaging, offering interesting facts about Japan.

The boss battles are a highlight, creative and rewarding. While the game takes some creative risks, the successful ones are truly memorable, and the less successful ones are easily forgiven. Bakeru is intensely likeable.

The Switch version suffers from some framerate inconsistencies. While not a major issue for me, those sensitive to this should be aware. Despite these minor flaws, Bakeru is a highly recommended title.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter: A Nostalgic Trip (3.5/5)

This 2002 classic follows Jango Fett's adventures before Attack of the Clones. You'll hunt down targets, utilizing various weapons and a jetpack. While initially engaging, the repetitive gameplay and dated mechanics (targeting, cover system, level design) show their age.

Aspyr's updated version boasts improved visuals and controls. However, the unforgiving save system remains. If you crave a nostalgic trip back to 2002, this is worth a look. Otherwise, it might be too rough around the edges.

Mika and the Witch’s Mountain: A Whimsical Delivery Service (3.5/5)

Inspired by Ghibli films, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain puts you in the role of a rookie witch delivering packages. The charming world and characters are a plus, but performance issues on the Switch (resolution and framerate dips) are noticeable. If you enjoy the core gameplay loop, you'll likely find it enjoyable despite the technical shortcomings.

Peglin: A Pachinko Roguelike Masterpiece (4.5/5) - Mikhail Madnani

Peglin is a fantastic pachinko roguelike that has only improved since its early access release. The core gameplay loop of aiming orbs at pegs to damage enemies and progress through zones is addictive. The Switch port performs well, with the exception of slightly less smooth aiming than on other platforms and longer load times. Touch controls are a welcome addition. The inclusion of in-game achievement tracking is a nice touch.

While cross-save functionality is missing, the overall experience is excellent. The game makes great use of the Switch's features, offering rumble, touchscreen, and button controls. A highly recommended title for fans of the genre.
