Thunderbolts Trailer Debate: Taskmaster's Absence in Key Scene Sparks Discussion

Author : Carter Apr 10,2025

The latest teaser for Thunderbolts has ignited a fiery debate among MCU fans regarding the fate of Taskmaster, portrayed by Olga Kurylenko. In the original trailer from September 2024, Taskmaster was prominently featured standing between Ghost and U.S. Agent in the Watchtower scene. However, the new teaser released recently shows the same scene, but with Taskmaster conspicuously absent.

What happened to Taskmaster?

This omission, coupled with the recent announcement of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, which included Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman but notably excluded Kurylenko, has led many fans to speculate that Taskmaster might not survive Thunderbolts.

The change in the teaser has sparked numerous theories. Some fans believe Marvel might be employing a double-bluff tactic, while others think it could be a strategic move related to the plot of Avengers: Doomsday. Additionally, the slight repositioning of characters in the new teaser has led to speculation that Sentry, known for his immense power, might have 'deleted' Taskmaster from the scene, a capability he has demonstrated in other trailer shots.

Redditor Matapple13 commented, "Marvel pretty much just sealed the fate of this character in the movie. Yesterday they announced Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman in the Avengers: Doomsday cast, but Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster's actress) was blatantly absent, and now, Marvel posts this..."

On the other hand, user puckallday suggested a different perspective, stating, "The amount of people saying she’s dying and Marvel seemingly leaning into that by barely showing her make me think there's a reveal there with her in the movie and that she lives."

PlayThe teaser begins with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, describing Sentry as "stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one," hinting at his potential role in Taskmaster's fate.

As the MCU continues to evolve, fans are eagerly awaiting more details. Thunderbolts is set to hit theaters in May 2025, followed by the TV show Ironheart in June, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps kicking off Phase 6 in July. Avengers: Doomsday is slated for May 1, 2026, with Secret Wars following in May 2027. With Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. hinting at more cast reveals for Avengers: Doomsday, there might still be hope for Taskmaster's future in the MCU.
