Ubisoft to Patch Assassin’s Creed Shadows at Launch

Ubisoft Releases Stealth Day-One Patch for Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Ubisoft has quietly prepared a significant day-one update for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, addressing multiple gameplay issues including sensitive temple modifications. IGN obtained exclusive patch notes that weren't publicly announced.

Day-One Patch Improvements:

  • Fixed player collision issues with movable objects in kofuns
  • Corrected procedural weapon removal during item sales
  • Adjusted prone positioning to prevent out-of-bounds exploits
  • Enhanced horse navigation mechanics
  • Improved lighting in caves, kofuns, and architectural transitions
  • Resolved cloth clipping issues for both protagonists
  • Removed blood effects from unarmed citizen attacks
  • Made temple/shrine furnishings indestructible (excluding generic world objects)

The most notable change involves making temple and shrine objects impervious to damage - a modification that appears responsive to recent controversies in Japan. While Ubisoft confirmed this is a global update, the timing suggests cultural sensitivity considerations.

Political Backlash Emerges

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba recently addressed parliamentary concerns about the game's depiction of sacred sites. Politician Hiroyuki Kada, representing Himeji's constituency containing the featured Itatehyozu Shrine, expressed concerns about potential real-world implications.

"While artistic freedom matters, we must prevent cultural disrespect," Kada stated regarding shrine destruction mechanics.

Prime Minister Ishiba responded:

"Defacing sacred sites constitutes national disrespect. We'll coordinate with relevant ministries to address such concerns appropriately."

Despite these political statements, legal experts suggest Ubisoft operates within Japanese constitutional protections for creative expression. The proactive patch demonstrates the developer's responsiveness to cultural considerations.

Ubisoft's High-Stakes Release

Following several commercial disappointments including Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft faces significant pressure for Assassin’s Creed Shadows to succeed. The series remains one of Ubisoft's most reliable franchises amid recent studio challenges.

IGN's 8/10 review praised the title: "Assassin's Creed Shadows refines the franchise's signature gameplay into one of its most polished iterations."
