Sony's policy requiring PlayStation Network (PSN) tethering for even single-player PC games has angered many gamers. This restriction, coupled with PSN's regional limitations, significantly impacts the availability of modern Sony titles on PC.
Recently, Sony announced some policy adjustments. While the company hasn't completely abandoned PSN tethering for PC games, they've introduced some leniency. The following titles will not require mandatory PSN tethering:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
However, players who choose to tether their games to PSN will receive in-game bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest at the game's start, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points to unlock features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In a November investor call, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the backlash against PSN connection requirements. He stated that PSN tethering is crucial for security and order, although he didn't clarify how this applies to single-player games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök. His comments focused on service-based games, leaving the rationale for single-player tethering unclear.
Times have changed, and this evolving situation warrants further observation.
