WoW Patch 11.1 Introduces Two New Races

Summary

  • Patch 11.1 in World of Warcraft introduces Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and Skyrocket races with Goblin jetpacks.
  • The Undermine zone in Patch 11.1 will not permit flying, instead featuring customizable cars and jetpacks.
  • Skyrocket races will challenge players with ring collection, speed, and increased difficulty.

World of Warcraft is set to thrill players with the introduction of two new types of races in Patch 11.1: Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and Skyrocket races utilizing Goblin jetpacks. These races will replace Skyriding in the new Undermine zone, which is set to be introduced in the first major content update for World of Warcraft: The War Within.

Patch 11.1, dubbed "Undermined," transports players to the bustling subterranean city of Undermine, the capital of the Goblins. Despite its expansive size, flying is not allowed in this zone. Instead, players will navigate the city using D.R.I.V.E., a dynamic and customizable car system that offers speed surpassing traditional Skyriding. World of Warcraft has also confirmed the inclusion of Breakneck races, which will leverage the D.R.I.V.E. system to its maximum potential.

In addition to Breakneck races, Patch 11.1 introduces Skyrocket races, which offer a novel flying experience using Goblin jetpacks. These races provide a unique movement style that blends elements of both Steady flight and Skyriding. Players cannot stop mid-air but maintain momentum and altitude without the drawbacks of either system. As demonstrated by WoW content creator MrGM on the Public Test Realm, racers gain speed by collecting rings, though increased speed reduces turning responsiveness, adding a layer of difficulty to the races.

With no Skyriding allowed in Undermine, Skyriding races are also absent from the zone. However, both Breakneck and Skyrocket races will feature achievements for achieving Bronze, Silver, and Gold times across all races. Additionally, there are reverse versions of all four Skyrocket and D.R.I.V.E. Breakneck races, although they do not include Advanced or Challenge courses like some Skyriding races.

Initial feedback on the new Skyrocket races has been mixed. Some players are eager to experience this new racing style, while others find the jetpack flying to be stiff and less responsive compared to Skyriding. Fortunately, as Patch 11.1 is still in development, there is time to refine these races before their anticipated release in February.
