NetEase's upcoming open-world RPG, formerly known as Project Mugen, has been officially rebranded as Ananta. Initially unveiled at Gamescom 2023, the game has finally released a new trailer after a lengthy silence, with further details promised on December 5th. Until then, you can view the teaser below:
The Name Change: A Mystery
The developers haven't yet commented on the reasoning behind the name change. Interestingly, "Ananta" translates to "infinite" in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of the original "Mugen" (also meaning infinite). The Chinese title reinforces this thematic consistency.
The gaming community is divided on the rebranding, though relief is widespread that the project hasn't been cancelled. Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually striking, its lack of gameplay footage has given Neverness to Everness a perceived advantage in the eyes of some players. However, many find Ananta's visuals more appealing.
A Curious Turn of Events
Adding to the intrigue, the development team has deleted all their previous social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. Only their Discord server remains, albeit renamed. This unexpected move has sparked considerable confusion within the gaming community.
In Ananta, players assume the role of an Infinite Trigger, a paranormal investigator combating supernatural threats. The cast includes characters such as Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila. For a deeper dive into the game's mechanics, visit the official website.
