CD Projekt Red has announced that Ciri will take on a major role in The Witcher 4, marking a significant and logical evolution in the series' narrative. Executive producer Malgorzata Mitrega explained that the transition from Geralt to Ciri is driven by both the progression of the game series and the thematic elements present in Andrzej Sapkowski's original works.
Mitrega pointed out that Geralt's storyline reached its conclusion in The Witcher 3, thereby opening the door for Ciri, who possesses immense potential. Having been intricately developed in both the books and the games, Ciri's character offers a rich tapestry of depth and complexity, enabling the developers to explore new creative avenues. Director Sebastian Kalemba highlighted that Ciri's youth provides players with greater flexibility in shaping her character, an opportunity not available with the more established Geralt.
Interestingly, the idea of shifting the protagonist to Ciri was under discussion nearly a decade ago, underscoring CD Projekt Red's long-term vision of her as Geralt's natural successor. Kalemba further elaborated that the fresh challenges and perspectives Ciri will encounter will pave the way for an equally epic new saga.
Actor Doug Cockle, who lends his voice to Geralt, endorsed the decision, highlighting Ciri's untapped potential as a central figure. While Geralt will still make an appearance in the new game, he will not be the focal point, thus emphasizing the new narrative direction.
