Civilization 7 Coming to VR This Spring 2025
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) will make its virtual reality debut exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. The announcement came during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025, marking it as the first VR and mixed reality entry in the franchise by 2K Games and Firaxis Games.
Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer for Civ, expressed his enthusiasm in a blog post on 2K’s official site:We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Chris Pruett, Meta’s Director of Games, also commented on the collaboration:With the recent release of the Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it's an awesome time for mixed reality.
He continued, Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
While Civilization 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not support PSVR2 at this time.
Board-Game Style Gameplay and Online Multiplayer
In Civ 7 VR, players are placed around a Command Table where they can navigate the world and engage in strategic gameplay. The design allows you to “peer down from high above or lean all the way in to appreciate the finer details of buildings and units, like a tabletop game come to life.”
Players can choose between immersive virtual reality or mixed reality modes and switch freely between them. According to 2K Games: “In virtual reality, players are transported to an ornate museum as they look out onto a vista personalized to their leader; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to its placement in a player's physical space.”
The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes. Up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets can join a session. You can fill your game with AI opponents or team up with friends to take them on—or challenge other human players in head-to-head matches.
During gameplay, players will see their friends and opponents represented in VR or MR across the Command Table as their chosen world leader. A 2K Account and a Meta Account are required for online multiplayer.
Firaxis Games Addresses Community Feedback
Firaxis Games has been actively responding to feedback received during Civ 7’s early access phase. The official Civ 7 Twitter (X) account confirmed that the development team is working on issues raised by players. Advanced Access for Civ 7 began on February 6, 2025, for those who purchased the Deluxe Edition or Founder’s Edition.
Since its early access launch on Steam, the game has seen mixed reviews, with many players pointing out usability concerns—particularly regarding the user interface, which some found difficult to navigate when locating key gameplay information.
To address these concerns, Firaxis released a statement outlining upcoming improvements. Among their top priorities is a full UI overhaul, aiming to “make interactions more intuitive, improve map readability, fix formatting inconsistencies, and more.”
Additional community-requested features include:
- Adding team-based play in multiplayer
- Expanding the variety of available map types
The studio also plans to roll out a quality-of-life update in March, focusing on “UI adjustments, ongoing AI balance and improvement, diplomacy and crisis tweaks, and further bug fixes.”
Civilization 7 VR is scheduled for release in Spring 2025 exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, though no exact date has been revealed yet. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will launch globally on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC platforms.
