Sid Meier's Civilization VII ushers in a new era for the iconic turn-based strategy series, available across major gaming platforms. This article clarifies its cross-play and cross-progression features.
Cross-Play in Civilization VII:
Civilization VII supports cross-play, but with limitations. Players require an active 2K account linked to their chosen platforms. Cross-play generally functions seamlessly across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, offering standard map sizes and player counts.
However, Nintendo Switch players experience restrictions. The Switch version cannot handle standard or larger map sizes. Multiplayer games with Switch players are limited to four players in Antiquity and Exploration Ages, and six players in the Modern Age. Therefore, while cross-play is possible with the Switch, these limitations must be considered.
Cross-Progression in Civilization VII:
Unlike the complexities of cross-play, cross-progression in Civilization VII is straightforward. With an active 2K account, progress is synced across all linked platforms. This means players can seamlessly continue their game on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or any other linked platform without restarting.
This feature, a departure from Civilization VI which added it post-launch, reflects modern gaming preferences. Whether playing on a Steam Deck, Switch, PC, or console, your progress is consistently tracked.
Civilization VII launches February 11th.
