A recent report by the video game research firm Niko Partners has sparked excitement in the gaming community, suggesting that Square Enix and Tencent are collaborating on a mobile version of the beloved MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV. This development, if confirmed, could significantly expand the reach of this iconic game.
Square Enix and Tencent Reportedly Making FFXIV Mobile Game
It's Mostly Unconfirmed Still
Niko Partners recently released a comprehensive report detailing a list of 15 video games approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) for import and domestic release. Among these titles is a mobile version of Square Enix's renowned MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, which is reportedly being developed by Tencent. The lineup also includes a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, two games based on Marvel IP (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile game inspired by Dynasty Warriors 8.
Rumors about Tencent working on a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV began circulating last month, but neither Tencent nor Square Enix have officially confirmed these reports. According to Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, via a post on his Twitter (X) on August 3, the Final Fantasy XIV mobile game is "expected to be a standalone MMORPG separate from the PC game." However, he emphasized that this information stems largely from "industry chatter" and awaits official confirmation.
Tencent's involvement in the mobile gaming industry is well-established, and this potential collaboration with Square Enix aligns with the latter's strategic shift towards a multiplatform approach. In May, Square Enix announced plans to "aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy" for its flagship titles, including Final Fantasy. This move aims to broaden the accessibility and appeal of their games across various platforms.
