Top horror studio Blumhouse is marking its 15th anniversary with a bold and unconventional celebration: a special re-release of the 2022 hit M3GAN in select theaters nationwide. This limited engagement, part of the Halfway to Halloween initiative in collaboration with Shudder, is set to preview the upcoming sequel, M3GAN 2.0, hitting theaters on June 27.
What makes this screening particularly controversial is its embrace of smartphone use during the film—something typically frowned upon in traditional cinema settings. Leveraging Meta’s “Movie Mate” technology, the experience transforms the audience’s second screen into an interactive companion during the viewing. Moviegoers can engage directly with M3GAN through an Instagram chatbot by sending a direct message to the official @M3GAN account while inside the theater. This real-time interaction unlocks exclusive content, including behind-the-scenes insights, surprise messages from filmmakers and cast, and special appearances in select locations.
The initiative also includes one-night-only screenings of Annabelle on May 7 and Ma on May 14, all utilizing the same interactive format. Designed to amplify audience excitement and deepen engagement, the campaign fully integrates Meta’s digital tools to modernize the theatrical experience.
While innovative, the move has sparked debate among cinephiles, raising concerns about the erosion of traditional moviegoing etiquette. Whether this tech-driven approach will be embraced or seen as a disruption remains to be seen. The M3GAN return engagement takes place on April 30 across theaters in the U.S., offering fans a first look at what could be the future of interactive horror—whether we’re ready for it or not.
