Marvel Rivals: A Hero Every 45 Days? An Ambitious Plan
Marvel Rivals, NetEase's hit third-person hero shooter, launched in December 2024 with 33 playable heroes and has already amassed a staggering 20 million players in its first month. The game's ambitious roadmap includes adding a new hero approximately every 45 days, resulting in a projected eight new heroes annually. This significantly surpasses the yearly hero additions of competitors like Overwatch 2.
Season 1 is currently underway, showcasing this rapid release schedule. The Fantastic Four are the first post-launch additions, with Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman already available, and The Thing and Human Torch anticipated later in the season. Two new New York City maps have also been introduced.
Game Director Guangyun Chen confirmed the 45-day hero release target in an interview with Metro. Each three-month season will feature two new heroes, one per half-season.
The Feasibility of the Plan
This aggressive release schedule has raised eyebrows among fans. While NetEase has access to a vast roster of Marvel characters, including lesser-known options like Jeff the Shark and Squirrel Girl, concerns center on the limited development and testing time for each new hero. Balancing a new hero against 37 existing heroes and approximately 100 abilities presents a significant challenge. The potential depletion of unique ability ideas is another concern. Unless NetEase possesses a substantial reserve of pre-developed heroes, maintaining this pace seems daunting.
What's Next?
Marvel Rivals players can anticipate the arrival of the remaining Fantastic Four members as Season 1 progresses. Additional content, such as new maps or in-game events, is also a possibility for the second half of Season 1. Fans are advised to monitor Marvel Rivals' social media channels for updates.
