MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

Warner Bros. Games has announced the impending closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter, following the completion of its fifth and final season.

Season 5: The Grand Finale

The official MultiVersus Twitter (now X) account revealed on January 31, 2025, that the game's servers will power down on May 30, 2025. A statement on the official website confirmed that Season 5, launching February 4, 2025, will be the game's last content update. This season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes), both unlockable through gameplay. Following Season 5's conclusion, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.

Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy

While online functionality will cease, players can continue to enjoy MultiVersus offline. A local gameplay mode, supporting solo play against AI or matches with up to three friends, will remain accessible. To retain this offline functionality, players must download the latest game version between February 4th (9 AM PST) and May 30th (9 AM PDT). The game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's online account, preserving all earned and purchased content.

Real-money transactions ended on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until the end of Season 5.

A Brief History and Unexpected End

Launched in July 2022 as a free-to-play public beta, MultiVersus quickly gained popularity with its team-based 2v2 format and diverse roster of characters. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced significant updates, including new characters, rollback netcode, and a new PvE mode. However, despite these improvements, the game faced ongoing challenges, including technical issues and player dissatisfaction with microtransactions. Reported player count drops further fueled concerns.

MultiVersus will conclude its run with a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support. The game will remain downloadable until May 30, 2025, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
