The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer immediately reveals a significant size increase compared to its predecessor. As the original Joy-Cons detach, the tablet section visibly expands, showcasing a substantial upgrade. This suggests a departure from Nintendo's traditionally pocket-friendly handhelds, embracing the larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, we can estimate the Switch 2's size based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we handled a Switch 2 mockup by peripheral maker Genki. While its accuracy was unconfirmed then, Nintendo's trailer shows a remarkably similar design, suggesting our CES measurements are quite accurate.
So, how large is the Switch 2? Let's explore our estimated dimensions:

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
We estimate an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement, excluding bezels), aligning with earlier 2024 rumors. This translates to approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall.
This represents a nearly 30% diagonal increase and a 66% larger area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch display. The Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen is 45% smaller diagonally and 111% smaller in area; the Switch OLED's 7-inch screen is 14% smaller diagonally and 30% smaller in area. Compared to the Steam Deck's 7-inch (and 7.4-inch OLED) screen, the Switch 2 is 8% (and 11%) larger diagonally and 11% (and 18%) larger in area respectively.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
The larger screen results in a larger console. Our CES measurements of the Genki mockup, and subsequent image scaling analysis, suggest the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. This is roughly a 25% increase over the original Switch (239mm x 102mm), 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), and 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). Depth appears similar to the original Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The trailer suggests similar Joy-Con width, but increased height. We estimate 32mm wide and 115mm tall—same width as the original (excluding the rail system), but 13mm taller, a 13% increase.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
Subtracting Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the screen unit at 200mm long and 115mm tall, a 31% increase over the original. This allows for approximately 11mm side bezels and 8mm top/bottom bezels.
These are estimations. Official dimensions from Nintendo may differ. However, based on the Genki mockup, we anticipate a console roughly 25% larger than the original Switch.
