Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Transition to Open Queue
Overwatch 2's popular 6v6 playtest, initially slated to end January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will shift to an open queue format.
This extension follows the mode's successful November 2023 return during the Overwatch Classic event and a subsequent December 17th launch. The initial run, though brief, demonstrated significant player engagement. While the current playtest omits some classic hero abilities, its popularity remains undeniable.
Keller's recent Twitter announcement confirmed the extension. While a precise end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 mode will soon move to the Arcade section. The mid-season transition will involve changing from role queue to an open queue, with teams needing 1-3 heroes per class.
The Argument for a Permanent 6v6 Mode
The enduring appeal of 6v6 in Overwatch 2 isn't surprising. Since the 2022 sequel launch, a return to 6v6 has been a top player request. The shift to 5v5, while a bold change, altered gameplay significantly, impacting player preferences.
The extended playtest fuels hope for a permanent 6v6 mode, potentially even within the competitive playlist. This possibility hinges on the successful conclusion of the ongoing playtests.
