Since its early access launch in January 2024, Palworld has attracted over 32 million players across all platforms, including PC via Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. The game, which was humorously dubbed “Pokémon with guns” before its release, has broken records and captured the attention of gamers worldwide.
Pocketpair, the developer behind Palworld, expressed their gratitude on social media, stating, “Thank you so much! As always, your support means the world to us!” John 'Bucky' Buckley, Pocketpair's Communications Director and Publishing Manager, added, “We will continue to work hard to make Palworld year 2 even better!”
Palworld was launched on Steam for $30 and was immediately available on Game Pass for Xbox and PC. The game's launch was so successful that Pocketpair's CEO, Takuro Mizobe, admitted the company struggled to manage the massive profits generated. In response to the game's breakout success, Pocketpair quickly signed a deal with Sony to create Palworld Entertainment, a new business focused on expanding the IP and bringing the game to PS5.
While Pocketpair continues to update and enhance Palworld, the company faces a significant legal challenge. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have filed a high-profile patent lawsuit against Pocketpair, seeking 5 million yen (approximately $32,846) each, plus late payment damages and an injunction to block Palworld's release. The lawsuit stems from comparisons between Palworld’s Pals and Pokémon, with accusations of design copying. Pocketpair confirmed the three Japan-based patents in question, which involve capturing creatures in a virtual field, similar to the mechanic in the 2022 Nintendo Switch exclusive, Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Recently, Pocketpair made changes to how players summon Pals, which some speculate is related to the ongoing lawsuit.
Patent experts view the lawsuit as evidence of the threat Palworld poses to established franchises. Pocketpair has vowed to defend its position in court, stating, “We will continue to assert our position in this case through future legal proceedings.” Despite the legal battle, Pocketpair has not slowed down, releasing major updates for Palworld and even announcing a crossover with the popular game Terraria.
