Steam Player Count Surges Post-Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has released its eagerly anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, the game's last major update. The finality of this update has sparked renewed interest, propelling BG3's player count from around 60,000 concurrent players to over 169,000, positioning it just outside Steam's top 10 most played games.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, shared insights on Twitter (X) on April 22 about the player surge following Patch 8's release. He emphasized that the robust mod support enables them to shift focus toward their "next big thing." It's been reported that Larian Studios will depart from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to embark on a new venture.
Consequently, D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast, and Hasbro will carry on the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently in discussions with other studios to potentially develop a Baldur’s Gate 4.

Patch 8, announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been meticulously crafted. This update brings 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play, and numerous other enhancements.
