PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But No Hole-in-One
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown an NFL 2K revival the clear winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's a promising game.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience is evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive course roster (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional frame rate hiccups on PC, didn't detract significantly from the overall experience.
The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving and challenging gameplay, catering to casual and hardcore players alike. The ability to shape shots via LB and adjust tee shots based on course obstacles adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics further enhance the realism. Playing as Tiger Woods, this year's cover athlete, provided a fun starting point.
The MyCareer mode incorporates engaging narrative elements, including a movie role offer alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that further affects performance. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (like achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.
The MyPlayer creator allows for reasonable character customization, and the inclusion of skill trees is a welcome addition. While multiplayer wasn't tested, the promise of ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies suggests enjoyable social gameplay, reminiscent of classic golf games. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with varying time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels in consistently solid gameplay without any major flaws. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it appears to be a worthwhile purchase for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
