The developers and publishers behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have firmly stated that they are not aiming to transform the game into a full-fledged "live service" model. This clarification comes in response to backlash from the community, particularly surrounding events that were perceived as promoting "FOMO" or the fear of missing out.
FOMO is a strategy frequently employed by live service games to drive player engagement and expenditure on limited-time virtual items. The underlying message of such events is clear: if players don't seize the opportunity to acquire these items now, they might never get another chance. This approach has drawn criticism for fostering an unhealthy dynamic between games and their communities. Notably, a 2021 study commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity highlighted that many games use psychological tactics, including the fear of missing out on exclusive items or deals, to encourage purchases of loot boxes.
Space Marine 2 does not feature loot boxes, but it does incorporate community events designed to unlock exclusive cosmetics. These events have sparked a significant backlash, leading some to label the game as a "live service" title.
In response to the community's concerns, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive, the game's publisher and developer, respectively, acknowledged the "cold feedback" regarding these events. They emphasized that the intention was never to create FOMO. In their statement, they assured players that all items made available during these events will eventually be accessible to everyone, not just a select few. The goal is to allow dedicated players to unlock items early, without causing widespread frustration or stress.
The companies also recognized the need for a more streamlined process to unlock these items, apologizing for any inconvenience caused and promising improvements. As a gesture of goodwill, Focus Entertainment is offering the emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This item was previously part of the Imperial Vigil community event, which required players to achieve victories with each of six classes in Operations Mode before the event's end date on March 3.
Players are eagerly anticipating the upcoming 7.0 update for Space Marine 2, which will introduce a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks. This follows recent assurances from Focus and Saber about addressing the community's concerns over content updates and outlining what players can expect in the coming months.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 achieved a record-breaking launch last year, selling 5 million copies and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer video game to date.
