Steam, the leading digital game distribution platform for PC gamers, has shattered its own concurrent user record yet again, surpassing 40 million players for the first time.
This past weekend—which aligned perfectly with the February 28 launch of Monster Hunter Wilds—Steam recorded an unprecedented 40,270,997 simultaneous players, eclipsing its prior peak of 39.9 million set in February 2025.
Data from SteamDB reveals Steam's concurrent player milestones have been consistently broken since May 2024, climbing from 35.5 million to 40.2 million users in just over six months—a key metric demonstrating Valve's platform dominance.
While Steam counts idle users (those logged in but not actively gaming), its peak in-game players also reached a new high, increasing from 12.5 million to 12.8 million.

Steam witnessed multiple record-breaking spikes throughout 2024, particularly in March and July. The latest surge likely stems from Monster Hunter Wilds' launch, which achieved a 24-hour peak of 1.38 million concurrent players. Other titles like Counter-Strike 2 (1.7 million), PUBG (819,541), Dota 2 (657,780), and Marve Rivals (268,283) also posted strong numbers.
Despite its popularity, Monster Hunter Wilds currently holds a 'mixed' Steam review rating, prompting Capcom to release official PC performance troubleshooting guides. The developer has also previewed Title Update 1, which will introduce an endgame social hub.
