The former moderator, DrTankHead, had previously stated that AI art would be permitted on both the main and NSFW Balatro subreddits, provided it was properly attributed and tagged. This statement, however, contradicted Localthunk and publisher Playstack's views.
Localthunk swiftly addressed the situation on Bluesky, clarifying that neither they nor Playstack condoned the use of AI-generated imagery. A subsequent statement on the subreddit itself confirmed the removal of DrTankHead from the moderation team, stating that AI-generated images would no longer be allowed. The developer emphasized their belief that AI art harms artists and pledged to update the subreddit's rules and FAQ accordingly.
Playstack's communications director followed up, acknowledging that the subreddit's existing rules regarding AI content lacked clarity, leading to the misinterpretation. The remaining moderators are working to improve the rule clarity.
DrTankHead, in a post on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, acknowledged their removal and stated that while they don't intend to make the subreddit AI-centric, they are considering allowing non-NSFW AI-generated art on specific days. One user responded by suggesting a temporary break from Reddit.
