CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, has entered pre-production. The announcement came alongside financial results revealing the Phantom Liberty expansion surpassed 10 million copies sold.
Development Team Allocations Revealed
The studio disclosed that 96 of its 730 developers are currently working on Cyberpunk 2 (codenamed Orion), while the majority team (422) remains focused on The Witcher 4. Both projects appear distant from release, though this marks Cyberpunk 2's formal transition into active development.
Creator Mike Pondsmith Shares Insights
Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith recently teased new details at Digital Dragons 2025. While less involved than with the original game, he revealed:
- Regular script reviews with CD Projekt
- Behind-the-scenes visits to review development progress
- A second major city complementing Night City
Pondsmith described the new setting as having "Chicago gone wrong" vibes, emphasizing its distinct identity from Night City and Blade Runner influences. He clarified this refers to aesthetic rather than literal Chicago representation.
Current CD Projekt Project Pipeline

The studio maintains an ambitious slate including:
- Cyberpunk 2077 Nintendo Switch 2 port (launching next month)
- New Cyberpunk Netflix animated series
- The Witcher 4 full development
- Multiple unannounced projects
While details remain scarce, early indications suggest Cyberpunk 2 may feature two fully-realized urban environments. The project's transition to pre-production signals CD Projekt's long-term commitment to the franchise following Cyberpunk 2077's successful redemption arc.
