Marvel Rivals: The Bot Controversy in NetEase's Popular Hero Shooter

Despite topping Steam and Twitch charts, Marvel Rivals, NetEase's hero shooter, is facing player scrutiny over the suspected use of bots in Quickplay matches. The game, lauded for its style and roster of iconic Marvel characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine, boasts a large player base. However, a growing number of players are reporting encounters with AI opponents in what should be player-versus-player matches.

"Playing against bots in Quickplay just doesn't feel good," one Reddit user stated, echoing a common sentiment. Many believe the game strategically inserts bots after a series of losses, potentially to prevent player frustration and maintain short queue times. This practice lacks transparency, with NetEase remaining silent on the issue (IGN has requested comment).

Suspicions are fueled by several recurring patterns: unusually repetitive in-game behavior, similar player names (often single words in all caps, or combinations of full and half names), and most notably, enemy profiles labeled "restricted." This lack of clarity frustrates players, especially those trying to improve their skills or learn new heroes. The concern is that perceived improvement might be an illusion, driven by consistently easy bot matches.

The use of bots in online games is not new, but the lack of transparency in Marvel Rivals is a key point of contention. Players are divided; some advocate for a toggle to enable or disable bot matches, others for their complete removal, while a few accept them as opportunities for achievement completion. One Reddit user, ciaranxy, initiated a community discussion highlighting the lack of player choice regarding bot encounters in Quickplay.

The author confirms encountering a suspicious Quickplay match exhibiting several reported red flags: unnatural player movement, similar names, and restricted profiles across the opposing team. NetEase has been contacted for comment.

Despite the controversy, NetEase's plans for Marvel Rivals in 2025 are ambitious, including the introduction of the Fantastic Four in Season 1 and a commitment to releasing at least one new hero per half-season. A new Spider-Man skin is also anticipated later this month. The bot issue, however, remains a significant concern for the game's community.
