Ōkami Sequel Confirmed for RE Engine

Author : Aaron Feb 23,2025

Following the exciting announcement of an Ōkami sequel at The Game Awards, speculation immediately arose regarding the game engine. IGN can exclusively confirm that the sequel will utilize Capcom's RE Engine, based on interviews with key project leads.

Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata confirmed the use of RE Engine, highlighting Machine Head Works' bridging role between Capcom (IP holder and directional lead) and Clover (development lead). Sakata emphasized Machine Head Works' extensive experience with both Capcom and the RE Engine, providing crucial support to Clover, who lacked prior experience with the engine. Furthermore, Machine Head Works also includes personnel with experience on the original Ōkami, further ensuring continuity and expertise.

Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi succinctly stated that RE Engine was essential, explaining that it's vital for realizing director Hideki Kamiya's artistic vision. Kamiya himself added that RE Engine's renowned expressive capabilities are expected by fans and crucial for meeting those high expectations.

Sakata further teased the potential of RE Engine, suggesting it will allow the team to achieve goals unattainable with the original Ōkami's technology. He highlighted the advancements in technology and the benefits of using RE Engine to surpass previous limitations.

RE Engine, Capcom's proprietary engine initially developed for Resident Evil 7, has powered many of their major titles, including the Resident Evil series, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and Dragon's Dogma. While many RE Engine games feature realistic art styles, the prospect of its application to Ōkami's distinct artistic style is particularly intriguing. Capcom's development of a successor engine, REX, and its gradual integration into RE Engine, hints at the possibility of seeing some of REX's technology incorporated into the Ōkami sequel.
