What makes this success even more noteworthy is that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launched simultaneously as a day-one Game Pass title alongside Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. For French studio Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive, these figures are an extraordinary testament to the game's reception.
The developers shared their excitement on social media: "We've been amazed seeing so many of you embark on this journey—feeling every step, every emotion, every discovery alongside you. To those just joining us: welcome. Tomorrow comes."
A Surprising Coexistence
When Bethesda stealth-dropped The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered around the same time as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, many expected stiff competition. Yet, contrary to predictions, both RPGs thrived.
Kepler Interactive revealed that Oblivion Remastered didn't just fail to overshadow Clair Obscur—it actually boosted interest in RPGs overall, benefiting their title in the process.
Matt Handrahan, Kepler Interactive's Senior Portfolio Manager, told The Game Business: "We always knew Expedition 33 had a distinct identity. Western and Japanese-style RPGs cater to different audiences—many Elder Scrolls fans wouldn’t necessarily play Final Fantasy, and vice versa.
"By launch, we had built our own momentum and felt confident standing alongside Oblivion. Factors like our price point and Game Pass inclusion reassured us of strong interest. The outcome exceeded our expectations—being near Oblivion didn’t hurt us at all. If anything, it heightened excitement for RPGs that week."
Recognition at the Highest Level
The game’s success has been so significant that French President Emmanuel Macron publicly praised Sandfall Interactive's achievement.
