Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation
Director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, recently provided an update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. While the project, initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009 with Fumito Ueda (the game's director) involved, has faced delays, Muschietti assures fans it's not abandoned.
The director acknowledges that several factors beyond creative desires influence the project's timeline. He cites the IP's popularity and the considerable budget required for a faithful adaptation as key elements currently under discussion. Muschietti confirms the existence of multiple scripts, with one currently favored.
This update follows Sony's recent announcement of several other video game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.
The Shadow of the Colossus game, a critically acclaimed action-adventure title, has influenced other games, such as Capcom's 2024 Dragon's Dogma 2. Muschietti, while not a self-described "big gamer," calls the game a "masterpiece" and has played it multiple times. He aims to capture the essence of Ueda's vision, which continues to resonate through GenDesign's newly announced sci-fi title. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the enduring legacy of Shadow of the Colossus makes a film adaptation highly anticipated. The goal is to deliver a live-action experience that appeals to existing fans while introducing the unique world to a wider audience.
