If you're a fan of Grand Theft Auto Online, you might be wondering what the future holds for the game, especially with the looming release of GTA 6. Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has made it clear that they are more than willing to keep supporting legacy titles as long as there is a demand from players. Let's dive deeper into what this means for the future of GTA Online.
GTA Online Might Survive After GTA 6’s Launch
The big question on everyone's mind is: what will happen to GTA Online once GTA 6 hits the market? While Rockstar Games hasn't provided a definitive answer, Strauss Zelnick, the boss at Take-Two, gave fans a glimmer of hope during an interview with IGN on February 14, 2025.
Zelnick was careful not to spill the beans on any specific plans for GTA Online, but he did offer a useful analogy to ease fans' concerns. "I'm going to speak theoretically only because I'm not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn't been made," Zelnick stated. "But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles."
To further illustrate his point, Zelnick brought up the example of NBA 2K Online in China. Launched in 2012 and followed by a sequel in 2017, the original game was not phased out despite the sequel's release due to the significant player base it maintained. "So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them," Zelnick added.
Given this statement, it seems likely that Rockstar and Take-Two might continue to support GTA Online as long as players are actively engaging with it, even after the launch of GTA 6. After all, GTA Online has been a major revenue generator for over a decade, and it wouldn't make sense to abandon such a successful title.
Rockstar Games May Create a Platform like Roblox and Fortnite for GTA 6
In addition to the future of GTA Online, there's exciting news about the online component of GTA 6. According to a report by Digiday on February 17, 2025, Rockstar is working on integrating user-generated content (UGC) into the online version of GTA 6, much like what we've seen with Roblox and Fortnite.
Digiday's report suggests that "Rockstar Games has been in discussions with top Roblox and Fortnite creators, as well as dedicated GTA content creators, about the potential to create custom experiences inside the upcoming game." This would allow players to tweak the game's assets and environments, and even introduce their own elements, creating a unique and engaging visual sandbox experience.
The incorporation of UGC could not only expand GTA 6's audience through content creators and modders but also provide Rockstar and Take-Two with an additional revenue stream through virtual item sales or revenue-sharing programs. While Digiday reached out to Rockstar Games for a comment, the company has yet to respond.
Despite being 14 years old, GTA 5 and its online component remain one of the most watched games on Twitch. With plans to involve modders and content creators in the GTA 6 online experience, the game is poised to generate significant buzz across various platforms.
