Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing with excitement over mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which mysteriously vanished soon after. Now, Nintendo has stepped in to clarify the situation regarding VRR on the Nintendo Switch 2.
In a statement provided to NintendoLife, Nintendo corrected the initial information about VRR: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error."
When asked about the possibility of VRR support for docked mode in a future firmware update, Nintendo remained tight-lipped, stating they have "nothing to announce on this topic."
This means that while the Nintendo Switch 2 does offer VRR as an option when used in handheld mode, users connecting their console to a TV won't have access to this feature at launch. This clarification follows a period of confusion sparked by the initial VRR mention, which was spotted and then quickly removed. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented how these mentions gradually disappeared from various sites over time.
While the absence of VRR in docked mode might disappoint some, it's not necessarily a closed door. For example, Sony introduced VRR support to the PS5 via a post-launch update, suggesting a similar update could be on the horizon for the Switch 2.
In other news related to the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has released a list of games slated for free performance upgrades, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Doug Bowser, head of Nintendo of America, has reassured fans that the company plans to have sufficient Switch 2 units available to meet demand throughout the holiday season.
