Free-to-play 3v3 shooter Spectre Divide is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch, mere weeks following its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release. Developer Mountaintop Studios will also cease operations.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the closure in a social media statement today.
"Regrettably, Season 1 didn't generate the necessary success to continue supporting the game or maintaining Mountaintop's operations," the announcement explained.

Initial optimism followed the game's strong debut week, attracting approximately 400,000 players with peak concurrents reaching 10,000 across platforms.
"However, sustaining sufficient player engagement and revenue to cover operational expenses proved impossible," the statement continued. "After the PC launch, we extended our remaining resources as far as possible, but we've exhausted our funding."
"We explored every potential solution - seeking publishers, additional investors, or acquisition opportunities. Ultimately, none materialized. The current gaming industry climate remains particularly challenging."
Spectre Divide servers will remain operational for 30 more days, with all Season 1 purchases being refunded.
This announcement contradicts October 2024 assurances that Spectre Divide "isn't going anywhere," when Mitchell stated the servers would remain online and updates would continue, claiming Mountaintop possessed "adequate funding for long-term support."
IGN's August 2024 preview praised the tactical shooter's innovative Duality system, allowing players to control dual characters simultaneously. The abrupt closure follows similar high-profile live-service failures including Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Sony's Concord.
