Assassin's Creed Shadows: Japan Censorship and Content Differences

Assassin's Creed Shadows Gets Censored in Japan

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) has received a CERO Z rating in Japan, resulting in significant content alterations for the Japanese release compared to international versions. This rating, reserved for 18+ audiences, necessitates modifications to comply with Japan's Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO) guidelines.

Content Changes in the Japanese Version:

The Japanese release will omit dismemberment and decapitation entirely. Depictions of wounds and severed body parts have also undergone revisions. Additionally, unspecified changes have been made to the Japanese audio track. Conversely, the international versions will offer players the option to toggle dismemberment and decapitation on or off within the game's settings.

CERO Z Rating and its Implications:

A CERO Z rating signifies content deemed appropriate only for players aged 18 and older. This isn't unprecedented for the Assassin's Creed franchise; previous titles like Valhalla and Origins also received this rating due to their violent content. CERO's stringent approach to gore and dismemberment has led to challenges for various game developers seeking Japanese releases. Notable examples include The Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space Remake, both of which were ultimately not released in Japan due to disagreements over required modifications.

Yasuke's Description Altered:

Further changes involve the description of Yasuke, a key protagonist. In Japanese language versions of the Steam and PlayStation store listings, the term "samurai" (侍) has been replaced with "騎当千" (Ikki tousen), meaning "a warrior who can face a thousand enemies." This follows previous controversy surrounding the use of "black samurai" to describe Yasuke, a point of contention within Japanese historical and cultural contexts. Ubisoft has previously stated their focus remains on creating entertainment for a broad audience, avoiding the promotion of specific agendas.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is scheduled for release on March 20, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
