Avowed's Success Spurs Talk of Expansions and Sequels
Obsidian Entertainment and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with Avowed's sales performance, hinting at future plans for the franchise. In a recent Bloomberg interview (February 22, 2025), Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel expressed strong interest in developing expansions or a sequel. While no official announcements have been made, Patel highlighted the established world and experienced team as key assets for future projects, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and the team's expertise, I’d love to see us do more with it."
A Rocky Development Road
Patel candidly discussed the challenges faced during Avowed's development, describing it as a "messy" process. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's potential sale, underwent significant changes, including a leadership shift and a game reboot in January 2021. The team ultimately streamlined the game, focusing on the Pillars of Eternity lore and shifting from an open world to open zones to enhance the quality of those areas. Patel's experience underscored the common pattern of initial chaos resolving into a cohesive final product.
Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?
The resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise with Avowed has sparked interest in a new title: Pillars of Eternity Tactics. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity Director Josh Sawyer confirmed internal enthusiasm for a tactics game, acknowledging the challenges of determining scope, visual quality, and overall scale. With Avowed's success shining a light on the franchise, the possibility of a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game seems increasingly likely. Sawyer also reiterated his desire to create Pillars of Eternity 3, but with a significantly larger budget, comparable to Baldur's Gate 3.
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
