With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly anticipating which Bethesda classic will be next in line for a revamp. Rumors are swirling that Fallout 3 could be the next title to receive the remaster treatment, especially after leaks surfaced in 2023. But what enhancements could Bethesda bring to this 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG?
Bruce Nesmith, a designer on Fallout 3, has highlighted the game's "not good" gun combat as an area ripe for improvement. Speaking to VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that a remastered Fallout 3 would feature shooting mechanics more akin to those found in Fallout 4. He noted, "What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3." Nesmith praised the significant improvements in gun combat made for Fallout 4, given that Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first foray into a shooter-style game.
Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, sets a high bar with numerous visual and feature enhancements. It boasts 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, but also includes revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additionally, it offers new dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. These changes have been well-received, with some fans suggesting Oblivion Remastered is more akin to a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified their decision to opt for a remaster rather than a full remake.
Nesmith believes that Fallout 3 Remastered would likely follow suit with similar enhancements. He noted that the original Fallout 3 combat "didn’t hold up to shooters at the time," but emphasized that significant improvements were made for Fallout 4. He anticipates these advancements would be incorporated into a remastered Fallout 3, especially if Bethesda is taking a similar approach to what was done with Oblivion.
He further commented on Oblivion Remastered, saying it wasn't merely updated to match Skyrim from 2011, but rather it "was brought up to something that, at least on the surface, looks like it exceeds the most recent graphics update in Skyrim." Nesmith even suggested that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered could be dubbed "Oblivion 2.0" due to its impressive overhaul.
Bethesda's plate is full with ongoing projects like The Elder Scrolls VI and possibly more Starfield content, alongside continued support for Fallout 76 and the Fallout TV show, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. This busy schedule promises exciting times ahead for fans of Bethesda's RPGs.
