Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Director’s Criticism On The Outer Worlds 2
Lacking New Game Mechanics
Daniel Vávra, the director of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (KCD2), has criticized Obsidian Entertainment for a lack of innovation in The Outer Worlds 2 (TOW2). In an X post on November 5, Vávra awarded the game a 7 out of 10, noting his disappointment over the absence of any new gameplay mechanics.
Vavra, co-founder of KCD2’s Warhorse Studios, is well-known for engaging in heated debates when fans critique his own titles. However, this time he has turned the tables and offered critical feedback on one of the year’s most anticipated releases.
He noted that despite having a 15-year development history and Microsoft’s substantial budget, Obsidian failed to “take [The Outer Worlds’] proven but dated formula somewhere new.” Vávra highlighted that his studio previously created Fallout and New Vegas—one of his all-time favorite games—which made him particularly critical of this latest entry.
KCD2’s director remarked, “Can any of you think of a single new game mechanic in The Outer Worlds that wasn't already present in Deus Ex or the original Fallout games more than 25 years ago? Unfortunately, I can’t.”
Vávra expressed his desire for a “living, simulated world” and “true non-linearity,” moving beyond what he described as “loot boxes, maintenance shafts, loading screens and level grinding in a static scripted world.”
Despite some criticism, TOW2 has remained popular, earning “Mostly Positive” reviews from the Steam community. It also holds a strong “Generally Favorable” Metacritic score of 84 among professional critics and review aggregators.
At Game8, we awarded The Outer Worlds 2 a perfect 90 out of 100 for significantly expanding upon its predecessor with improved humor, deeper gameplay, and polished execution. To read our full thoughts on the game, please visit our detailed review below.
