Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has made the tough decision to cancel an unannounced incubation project this week, resulting in the layoff of an unspecified number of team members involved in the project. The news initially surfaced through a LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator, which has since been removed, stating their involvement in the project for the past year and their subsequent job search.
IGN independently verified the cancellation of this multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) project. This project was developed by a team that previously worked on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. Although the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources described it as a "small" group. Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has indicated on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.
This move is part of a broader trend of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring at Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023 with significant job cuts at BioWare and Codemasters. The trend continued nearly a year ago with EA laying off 670 employees across the company and canceling several projects, including the Star Wars FPS. This wave of layoffs affected around two dozen Respawn employees at the time. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers reassigned to other projects and additional key staff laid off.
IGN has sought comments from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
