Housemarque, renowned for their work on the acclaimed 2022 roguelite shooter Returnal, has unveiled their latest project, Saros, set to launch in 2026 exclusively for PlayStation 5, with enhanced features for the PS5 Pro. The game introduces Rahul Kohli as the protagonist, Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer on a quest for answers on a treacherous, ever-changing planet. This planet is not only haunted by an ominous eclipse but is also home to at least one colossal and formidable entity. The essence of Returnal is palpably present in Saros, with its roguelike theme underscored by the motto "come back stronger" and the familiar bullet-hell gameplay, hallmarked by a barrage of fireballs.
During the recent PlayStation State of Play, Saros was revealed, and it's clear that it embodies Housemarque's signature style. Creative director Gregory Louden describes Saros as the "ultimate evolution" of the studio's gameplay-first approach. Although a new single-player IP, Saros builds upon the third-person action mechanics of Returnal. However, Louden emphasized on the PlayStation Blog that Saros introduces significant gameplay distinctions, particularly with permanent resources and progression. Unlike Returnal, where death resets most progress, Saros allows players to permanently enhance their weapons and suits, despite the world altering with each demise.
Housemarque is set to provide more details later this year, including an extended gameplay showcase. For a comprehensive overview of all announcements from today's PlayStation State of Play, you can find our detailed recap here.
