Squad Busters celebrates its first anniversary with the arrival of Update 2.0, launching May 13th. Since its 2024 debut, the game hasn't achieved the player engagement Supercell envisioned. Could this major overhaul change its trajectory?
More Than Minor Adjustments
Squad Busters 2.0 represents a fundamental reinvention of the game. From core combat mechanics to victory conditions, nearly every aspect is undergoing transformation.
The most significant innovation involves Heroes - players now select a lead character to command their squad. If your Hero falls in battle, defeat follows immediately. These commanding figures are adapted from existing roster characters.
Combat receives a dramatic makeover too: movement and attacks now synchronize seamlessly. This creates more intense, dynamic matches where constant action replaces stop-and-go fighting.
Victory conditions simplify radically - instead of eliminating every opponent, you need only defeat the enemy Hero. Some players are questioning whether this shifts Squad Busters too close to Brawl Stars territory.
Squad Busters 2.0 Streamlines Its Offerings
Supercell is removing multiple game modes including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Certain legacy skins and progression systems are also being retired, with Hero Points and other compensations planned.
The reasoning behind these sweeping changes is clear. Squad Busters hasn't achieved the phenomenal success of Supercell's flagship titles like Clash of Clans.
With Update 2.0 launching just before the May 29th anniversary, Supercell aims to revitalize interest. Special piñata events will reward daily logins, including opportunities to unlock Mortis as a new Hero.
