Capcom is focusing on reviving classic game franchises, starting with Onimusha and Okami. This strategy, announced in a December 13th press release, aims to create high-quality content by leveraging Capcom's extensive library of intellectual property.
The new Onimusha game, set in Edo-period Kyoto, is scheduled for release in 2026. A new Okami sequel is also in development, helmed by the original game's creators, though its release date remains unannounced.
Capcom explicitly stated its intention to "re-activate dormant IPs," emphasizing its commitment to producing high-quality titles efficiently. Alongside these revivals, the company is also developing Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both slated for 2025. This commitment to classic IPs doesn't preclude new projects; recent releases include Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal.
Clues about future revivals might lie in Capcom's February 2024 "Super Election," a fan vote to determine which sequels and remakes were most desired. The results revealed strong support for Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire. Given the long dormancy of these franchises (Dino Crisis' last installment was in 1997, Darkstalkers in 2003, and Breath of Fire 6, an online RPG, shut down in 2017), remastering or sequels are highly anticipated.
While Capcom hasn't confirmed which IPs will be revived next, the "Super Election" results, alongside the Onimusha and Okami announcements, offer significant insight into the company's future plans.
