Sony's copyright claims against Bloodborne fan projects are escalating. Following the takedown of Lance McDonald's Bloodborne 60fps mod after four years, Lilith Walther's Bloodborne PSX demake YouTube video has now received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement, a company reportedly hired by Sony. McDonald confirmed MarkScan's involvement, noting they also issued the DMCA for his 60fps patch.
The timing raises speculation, particularly given recent advancements in PS4 emulation achieving near-remaster quality at 60fps. This has led to theories, including McDonald's "copium theory," suggesting Sony's aggressive action is a preemptive move to clear the way for an official 60fps remake or remaster, potentially to avoid trademark conflicts with existing fan projects.
Bloodborne's continued absence from next-gen platforms remains a significant point of contention among fans. While Sony has yet to comment, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered a personal theory: Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep attachment to the game prevents him from allowing others to work on it, and Sony respects his wishes.
Despite Miyazaki's past statements indicating FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership and his acknowledgment of the game's suitability for modern hardware, Bloodborne remains largely untouched nearly a decade after its release. The situation leaves fans hopeful, yet uncertain, about the future of this beloved title.
