CD Projekt Red is setting a new standard for NPC development in The Witcher 4. Following feedback on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, the studio aims to create a truly immersive world where every non-playable character feels alive and unique.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba explained their new approach: “Our guiding principle is that every NPC should appear to be living their own life, with their own individual story.”
This commitment is evident in the first trailer, showcasing the secluded village of Stromford. Villagers adhere to local superstitions, venerating a forest deity. A scene depicts a girl praying in the woods until Ciri arrives to battle a monster.
Kalemba further emphasized their dedication to realism: “We're striving for maximum realism in NPCs – from their physical appearance to their facial expressions and behavior. This will enhance immersion to an unprecedented degree. We're raising the bar for quality.”
The developers plan to imbue each village and character with distinctive traits and narratives, reflecting the unique beliefs and cultural practices of isolated communities.
The Witcher 4's release is slated for 2025, and fans are anxiously anticipating further details on the game's innovative approach to world-building and character design.
