"Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Sparks Debate on Turn-Based Games"

Author : Nicholas May 03,2025

The debate over turn-based versus action-oriented gameplay in role-playing games (RPGs) has been reignited with the release of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Launched last week, this RPG has garnered widespread acclaim, including from IGN, for its unabashed homage to classic turn-based games. With features like turn orders, Pictos to equip and master, zoned-out "dungeons," and an overworld map, Clair Obscur draws heavily from beloved titles such as Final Fantasy VIII, IX, and X. Yet, it also incorporates elements from action games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Mario & Luigi, using quick-time events for attacks and parrying/dodging for defense.

In an interview with RPGsite, producer Francois Meurisse emphasized that Clair Obscur was designed as a turn-based game from the outset. This approach has sparked discussions on social media, with many citing the game's success as evidence that turn-based mechanics still resonate with modern audiences. This sentiment is particularly poignant in light of comments made by Naoki Yoshida, producer of Final Fantasy XVI, who noted a shift towards action-based mechanics in RPGs due to evolving player preferences, especially among younger audiences.

Yoshida's observations reflect the trajectory of the Final Fantasy series, with recent titles like Final Fantasy XV, XVI, and the VII remake series adopting more action-driven systems. These changes have elicited mixed reactions, with some fans yearning for the return of turn-based gameplay. Clair Obscur's success has fueled debates, with some suggesting it as a model for Final Fantasy to follow. However, the situation is more nuanced. Square Enix has not abandoned turn-based RPGs entirely, as evidenced by the success of Octopath Traveler 2 and ongoing projects like SaGa Emerald Beyond and the Bravely Default remaster for Switch 2.

While some may argue that Final Fantasy should emulate Clair Obscur, it's important to recognize the unique aesthetic and iconography of the Final Fantasy series. Reducing Clair Obscur to a mere imitation of Final Fantasy oversimplifies both games. Historical discussions, such as those comparing Lost Odyssey to Final Fantasy XIII or debating the merits of Final Fantasy VI versus VII, highlight the ongoing nature of these debates within the gaming community.

Sales considerations also play a role in these decisions. Yoshida mentioned that while he appreciates command system RPGs, the expected sales and impact of Final Fantasy XVI influenced its direction. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's impressive sales of 1 million copies in three days demonstrate the potential for turn-based RPGs, though Square Enix's expectations for Final Fantasy are typically higher.

The broader success of turn-based games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Metaphor: ReFantazio further supports the viability of the genre. Clair Obscur's success is a testament to the creativity and authenticity of its development team at Sandfall Interactive and Kepler. It represents a resurgence of mid-budget RPGs, alongside titles like Visions of Mana and Ruined King, though whether it can reach the heights of games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Disco Elysium remains to be seen.

As for whether Clair Obscur's success necessitates a shift in Final Fantasy's direction, it's less clear. Square Enix's recent challenges with Final Fantasy XVI and FF7 Rebirth's profits suggest broader industry shifts and the high costs of developing major franchise entries. The key takeaway from Clair Obscur's success is the importance of authenticity and innovation. As Swen Vincke of Larian Studios noted, the focus should be on creating a game that the creative team is passionate about, rather than rehashing old debates. This approach not only resonates with players but also allows new games to shine on their own merits.
