Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed: A Development Odyssey
Bloomberg recently interviewed Carrie Patel, Avowed's second game director, revealing a turbulent development journey marked by the complete overhaul of a two-year project. Initially, Obsidian envisioned Avowed as a hybrid of Destiny and Skyrim, blending cooperative open-world exploration with multiplayer functionality.
The 2020 teaser trailer generated considerable fan enthusiasm, yet it concealed the game's far-from-finished state. A decision was made to scrap the entire project and begin again, leaving the teaser as a testament to a discarded prototype vastly different from the final release.
Patel took the helm as game director post-reboot, reimagining the project's core. She moved away from the Skyrim and Destiny influences, abandoning the open-world design and multiplayer features. Obsidian returned to its signature zone-based structure, focusing on a rich single-player narrative deeply rooted in the Pillars of Eternity universe.
This mid-development restart presented monumental obstacles, comparable to filmmaking without a script. Teams navigated uncertainty as leadership solidified a unified vision. Despite these significant challenges, Avowed's development continued for another four years before its eventual launch.
