Xbox CEO Phil Spencer Reflects on Past Mistakes and Future Plans
In a recent interview at PAX West 2024, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer openly discussed past decisions, acknowledging some significant missed opportunities. He cited Bungie's Destiny and Harmonix's Guitar Hero as examples of franchises he regrets not securing for Xbox, labelling these choices among the worst of his career.
While acknowledging his close relationship with Bungie during his early years at Xbox, Spencer admitted that Destiny's initial appeal eluded him, only appreciating its potential later. Similarly, he revealed his initial skepticism towards Guitar Hero's success.
Despite these setbacks, Spencer emphasized his forward-looking approach, focusing on future projects rather than dwelling on past regrets.
Dune: Awakening and Xbox Release Challenges
Xbox's future plans include bringing major franchises to its platform, notably Dune: Awakening from Funcom. While slated for release on Xbox Series S, alongside PC and PS5, Funcom's Chief Product Officer, Scott Junior, highlighted challenges in optimizing the game for the Series S. Junior confirmed that despite these hurdles, Dune: Awakening will perform well even on older hardware.
Entoria: The Last Song Faces Xbox Release Delays
Indie developer Jyamma Games' Entoria: The Last Song, initially scheduled for September 19th release on Xbox, has faced significant delays due to a lack of communication and response from Microsoft. The game's Xbox version remains uncertain, while the PS5 and PC versions proceed as planned. Jyamma Games CEO, Jacky Greco, expressed frustration over the situation, highlighting the lack of response from Xbox and the financial impact of the delays.
